ศาสนาพุทธในประเทศฟิลิปปินส์

ศาสนาพุทธในประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ เป็นศาสนากลุ่มเล็ก ๆ ในประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ ในอดีตเป็นศาสนาที่ส่งอิทธิพลต่อวัฒนธรรมในดินแดนของประเทศฟิลิปปินส์มาช้านาน ก่อนการมาถึงของศาสนาอิสลาม โดยส่งอิทธิพลด้านคำยืมของภาษาต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งการค้นพบหลักฐานทางโบราณคดีที่เกี่ยวเนื่องกับพุทธศาสนา ซึ่งโดยมากเป็นแบบวัชรยาน

ปัจจุบันพุทธศาสนิกชนส่วนใหญ่เป็นชาวฟิลิปปินส์เชื้อสายญี่ปุ่นและเชื้อสายจีน จากการสำรวจสำมะโนครัวประชากรเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2553 พบว่ามีพุทธศาสนิกชน 46,558 คน ส่วนหนึ่งก็เพราะบุคคลเชื้อสายจีนส่วนใหญ่ร้อยละ 83 เข้ารีตศาสนาคริสต์เช่นคนส่วนใหญ่ในฟิลิปปินส์

ประวัติ

ประเทศฟิลิปปินส์มีการรับศาสนาพุทธเมื่อไรไม่เป็นที่ปรากฏ แต่คาดว่าคงรับอิทธิพลจากอาณาจักรศรีวิชัยบนเกาะสุมาตราและอาณาจักรมัชปาหิตบนเกาะชวา ต่อมาทั้งสองรัฐนั้นได้เปลี่ยนนิกายจากเถรวาทเป็นวัชรยานเมื่อคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 7 จากการขุดค้นทางโบราณคดี พบประติมากรรมรูปครุฑ รูปภาพของพระปัทมปาณีหรือพระอวโลกิเตศวร รวมทั้งพบภาพที่เชื่อว่าเป็นพระมัญชุศรีในถ้ำตาบนบนเกาะปาลาวัน

เจ้า หรู่โก้ว (趙汝适) ผู้ควบคุมการพาณิชยนาวีในมณฑลฝูเจี้ยน ได้เขียนหนังสือ "รายชื่อเผ่าอนารยชนต่าง ๆ" (諸番志) ได้บันทึกถึงดินแดนแห่งหนึ่งชื่อหมาอี่ (麻逸) ปัจจุบันคือเกาะมินโดโร ซึ่งเป็นรัฐอิสระก่อนตกเป็นเมืองขึ้นของสเปน โดยมีเนื้อหาว่า "รัฐหมาอี่ อยู่ทางตอนเหนือของเกาะบอร์เนียว มีชนพื้นเมืองอาศัยอยู่ในหมู่บ้านขนาดใหญ่ซึ่งตั้งอยู่สองฝั่งปากแม่น้ำและปกปิดร่างกายด้วยผ้าเฉพาะบริเวณสะโพก มีพุทธปฏิมาโลหะไม่ทราบที่มากระจัดกระจายอยู่ในป่ารกชัฏ"

ส่วนงานเขียนของโฮเซ รีซัล (Jose Rizal) และเฟอร์ดินานด์ บลูเมนทริตต์ (Ferdinand Blumentritt) ต่างออกมายอมรับแนวคิดที่ว่า "มีความเชื่อมโยงกับศาสนาพุทธ" เช่นบลูเมนทริตต์เสนอว่าหมาอี่คงอยู่ที่ไหนสักแห่งบนเกาะลูซอน และรีซัลอ้างอิงถึง "พระพุทธรูป" ที่เจ้า หรู่โก้วระบุในเอกสาร โดยรีซัลเขียนไว้ว่า "ความอ่อนโยนและใจกว้างของธรรมเนียมตากาล็อกที่ชาวสเปนคนแรกพบนั้น ผิดไปจากคนเผ่าเดียวกันที่อยู่ต่างถิ่นออกไปทั้ง ๆ ที่อยู่บนเกาะลูซอนเหมือนกัน คงเป็นผลจากการนับถือศาสนาพุทธ (เพราะพบพระพุทธรูปทำจากทองแดง)"

ประเทศฟิลิปปินส์ในปัจจุบันมีโรงเรียนสอนศาสนาพุทธอยู่หลายแห่ง มีศาสนสถานทั้งของนิกายมหายาน วัชรยาน และเถรวาท มีองค์กรเผยแผ่ศาสนา และศูนย์วิปัสสนาต่าง ๆ เป็นต้นว่าของกลุ่มสุขาวดี และสมาคมสร้างคุณค่า ทั้งยังมีการก่อตั้งสมาคมมหาโพธิของนิกายเซนเมื่อเดือนตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2541
