สารานุกรม

สารานุกรม คือเรื่องคัดย่อที่ถูกเขียนขึ้นสำหรับการรวบรวมความรู้จากทุกสาขาวิชาหรือจากสาขาวิชาหนึ่งสารานุกรมแบ่งออกเป็นบทความหรือรายการที่มักเรียงตามตัวอักษรของชื่อบทความ และบางทีอาจแบ่งเป็นหมวดหมู่ตามแก่นเรื่อง แต่ละบทความในสารานุกรมมักยาวและละเอียดกว่าในพจนานุกรม กล่าวได้ว่าบทความในสารานุกรมเน้นข้อเท็จจริงเกี่ยวกับหัวข้อนั้น ๆ ต่างกับพจนานุกรมที่มักเน้นเกี่ยวกับข้อมูลทางภาษาศาสตร์เกี่ยวกับคำศัพท์ เช่น ความหมาย การอ่าน การใช้ และรูปแบบตามหลักไวยากรณ์

สารานุกรมที่เป็นที่รู้จักกันดีได้แก่ สารานุกรมบริเตนนิกา (Encyclopædia Britannica) สารานุกรมที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในโลกที่มีการตีพิมพ์ ตีพิมพ์ฉบับแรกในภาษาอังกฤษในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2311–2314 (ค.ศ. 1768–1771) ในเมืองเอดินบะระ สกอตแลนด์ ซึ่งในปัจจุบันได้มีการตีพิมพ์และจำหน่ายในฉบับซีดี

สารานุกรมสามารถเป็นเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับเรื่องทั่วไป ดังที่ปรากฏในสารานุกรมที่มีชื่อเสียง สารานุกรมบริเตนนิกาในภาษาอังกฤษและสารานุกรมบร็อกเฮาส์ (Brockhaus) ในภาษาเยอรมัน หรือสารานุกรมอาจจะเป็นเรื่องราวเฉพาะทางเช่น สารานุกรมเกี่ยวกับ การแพทย์ ประวัติศาสตร์ ปรัชญา หรืออาจจะเป็นสารานุกรมที่ครอบคลุมเนื้อหาในแต่ละภูมิภาค ประเทศ หรือกลุ่มชน และขณะที่บางสารานุกรมจัดทำขึ้นเฉพาะกลุ่มเป้าหมาย เช่นสารานุกรมสำหรับเยาวชน ที่จะมีเนื้อหาที่อ่านง่าย และเข้าใจง่าย สารานุกรมจะใช้การจัดเรียงหัวข้อ 2 ลักษณะ คือ เรียงตามอักขระ และ เรียงตามกลุ่มเนื้อหา ในยุคปัจจุบันมีการพัฒนาของเทคโนโลยีได้มีการนำสารานุกรมมาจัดเก็บในรูปแบบใหม่รวมถึงการจัดเรียงลำดับข้อมูล ดังตัวอย่างเช่นโครงการวิกิพีเดีย และ เอชทูจีทู (h2g2) เพื่อให้การใช้งานสารานุกรมง่ายต่อการใช้งาน

สารานุกรมเป็นคำสมาสจากคำ สาร และ อนุกรม มีความหมายรวมว่า สาระ หรือ เรื่องราว ซึ่งมีการจัดเรียงเป็นลำดับ หมวดหมู่ คำว่าสารานุกรมในภาษาอังกฤษ คือ Encyclopedia หรือ Encyclopædia ซึ่งมีที่มาจากภาษากรีก εγκύκλιος παιδεία (enkyklios paideia; "in a circle of instruction") จากคำว่า εγκύκλιος หมายถึง circuit shaped. โดย κύκλος หมายถึง circuit และ παιδεία หมายถึง instruction คำว่า Encyclopedia นี้บางครั้งก็ใช้ว่า Cyclopaedia ซึ่งให้ความหมายเหมือนกัน

The emphasis in an encyclopedia is much more on the nature of the things for which the words and phrases stand.
