อันดับนกตะขาบ เป็นอันดับ ของนกขากรรไกรแบบใหม่อันดับหนึ่ง ใช้ชื่ออันดับว่า Coraciiformes
โดยที่คำว่า "Coraciiformes" นั้น หมายถึง "เหมือนนกเรเวน " หรืออีกบริบทคือ "อีกา " (อีกาจัดเป็นนกเกาะคอน ) โดยมาจากคำว่า "Corax" ในภาษาละติน มีความหมาย "อีกา" และคำว่า "Forma" หมายถึง "รูปแบบ" ซึ่งเป็นคำลงท้ายในการตั้งชื่อทางวิทยาศาสตร์ เนื่องจากเป็นนกที่มีลักษณะคล้ายกับอีกา
เป็นนกที่มีขนาดเล็กจนถึงขนาดใหญ่ มีลักษณะโดยร่วมกัน คือ จะงอยปากมีหลายรูปแบบ คือ ปากตรง ปากแบนข้าง ปากโค้ง ปากเป็นรูปขอ รูจมูกไม่ทะลุถึงกันเพราะมีผนังกั้น หางยาวปานกลางจนถึงยาวมาก ปลายหางมนหรือเป็นหางตัด ปีกยาวปานกลางจนถึงยาวมาก ปลายปีกมักแหลม ขนปลายปีกมี 10-11 เส้น มีขนกลางปีกเส้นที่ 5 ยกเว้นในบางชนิด ขายาวปานกลางหรือขาสั้น แข้งสั้น หน้าแข้งด้านหน้าปกคลุมด้วยเกล็ดขนาดใหญ่แบบเกล็ดซ้อน โดยเกล็ดแต่ละชิ้นมีขนาดไม่เท่ากัน นิ้วหลังสั้นกว่านิ้วหน้า โคนนิ้วเป็นแบบนิ้วติด ยกเว้นในบางวงศ์ แกนขนรองมีขนาดเล็กหรือไม่มี หัวอาจมีหงอนหรือมีขนก็ได้
มีพฤติกรรมทำรังตามโพรงไม้หรือโพรงดินตามริมฝั่งแม่น้ำ ไข่มีเปลือกสีขาวหรือสีน้ำเงิน วางไข่ครั้งละ 2-8 ฟอง ลูกนกแรกเกิดไม่สามารถที่จะเดินหรือช่วยเหลือตัวเองได้ กินผลไม้เป็นอาหารหลัก และเสริมด้วยสัตว์ขนาดเล็ก ๆ เช่น หนู หรือกิ้งก่า และแมลงต่าง ๆ พบกระจายพันธุ์อยู่แทบทุกภูมิภาคของโลก ยกเว้นเกาะฮาวาย
ประกอบไปด้วยวงศ์ทั้งหมด 11 วงศ์ โดยนกที่เป็นที่รู้จักกันดีในอันดับนี้ ได้แก่ นกเงือก (Bucerotidae) ซึ่งเป็นนกที่มีหงอนบนหัวและมีขนาดใหญ่, นกตะขาบ (Coraciidae), นกกะรางหัวขวาน (Upupidae), นกกระเต็น (Alcedinidae) เป็นต้น (แต่ในบางข้อมูลจะจัดนกเงือก, นกกระเต็น และนกกะรางหัวขวาน แยกออกเป็นอันดับต่างหาก)
ในประเทศไทย พบทั้งสิ้น 5 วงศ์ ประมาณ 38 ชนิด
