เบอรินเจีย

เบอรินเจีย (อังกฤษ: Beringia) หรือ สะพานแผ่นดินเบริง (Bering Land Bridge) เป็นพื้นที่ที่ได้รับการนิยามว่าเริ่มตั้งแต่แม่น้ำลีนา ประเทศรัสเซีย ทางด้านตะวันตก ไปจนถึงแม่น้ำแมกเคนซี ประเทศแคนาดา ทางด้านตะวันออก และเริ่มตั้งแต่เส้นขนานที่ 72 องศาเหนือในทะเลชุกชีทางด้านเหนือ ไปจนถึงปลายคาบสมุทรคัมชัตคาทางด้านใต้ ครอบคลุมพื้นที่ทะเลชุกชี ทะเลเบริง ช่องแคบเบริง คาบสมุทรชุกชี คาบสมุทรคัมชัตคา อะแลสกา และยูคอนในปัจจุบัน

ในยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์สะพานแผ่นดินนี้เป็นสะพานแผ่นดินที่มีขนาดใหญ่มาก ในช่วงเวลาหนึ่งในยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์อาจกว้างถึง 1,000 กิโลเมตรและครอบคลุมพื้นที่ประมาณรัฐบริติชโคลัมเบียและรัฐแอลเบอร์ตารวมกัน (ราว 1,600,000 ตารางกิโลเมตร) ปัจจุบันมีส่วนที่หลงเหลืออยู่ของสะพานแผ่นดินเพียงเล็กน้อย เช่น หมู่เกาะไดออมีด เกาะเซนต์พอลและเกาะเซนต์จอร์จในหมู่เกาะพริบิลอฟ เกาะเซนต์ลอว์เรนซ์ เกาะเซนต์แมตทิว เกาะคิง เป็นต้น

ศัพท์ เบอรินเจีย เป็นศัพท์ที่เอริก ฮัลเตน นักพฤกษศาสตร์และนักชีวภูมิศาสตร์ชาวสวีเดนบัญญัติขึ้นใน ค.ศ. 1937 จากชื่อของไวทัส เบริง นักสำรวจชาวเดนมาร์ก ในยุคน้ำแข็งนั้น เบอรินเจียมีลักษณะเป็นทุ่งหญ้าสเตปป์ที่ไม่มีน้ำแข็งหรือธารน้ำแข็งปกคลุม เนื่องจากมีหิมะตกน้อย เช่นเดียวกับในไซบีเรียและทางเหนือและตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของจีนในช่วงเวลาเดียวกัน

เชื่อกันว่ามีมนุษย์กลุ่มเล็ก ๆ ราวสองถึงสามพันคนเดินทางจากไซบีเรียตะวันออกมาถึงเบอรินเจียในช่วงยุคน้ำแข็งใหญ่สุดครั้งสุดท้าย กลายเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นการตั้งถิ่นฐานของมนุษย์ในทวีปอเมริกาในช่วง 16,500 ปีก่อน การเข้าไปตั้งถิ่งฐานน่าจะเริ่มขึ้นหลังจากที่ธารน้ำแข็งอเมริกาที่ขวางทางลงใต้ละลาย และก่อนที่แผ่นดินจะถูกตัดขาดจากการเพิ่มขึ้นของระดับน้ำทะเลในช่วง 11,000 ปีก่อน
