ไทรออปส์ลำตัวด้านบน (ซ้าย) และด้านล่าง (ขวา)
ไทรออปส์ (อังกฤษ : Triops ) เป็นสัตว์ไม่มีกระดูกสันหลัง จำพวกสัตว์ขาปล้อง ประเภทหนึ่ง จัดอยู่ในไฟลัม ครัสตาเซียน เช่นเดียวกับ กุ้ง หรือ ปู และอยู่ในอันดับ Notostraca ในวงศ์ Triopsidae
ไทรออปส์ เป็นสัตว์น้ำ ขนาดเล็กที่อาศัยอยู่ในน้ำจืด มีรูปร่างประหลาดคล้ายแมงดาทะเล จึงมีผู้เรียกว่า "แมงดาทะเลน้ำจืด" หรือ "กุ้งไดโนเสาร์" เนื่องจากเป็นสัตว์ที่ไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงรูปร่างมาตั้งแต่ยุคคาร์บอนิฟอรัส ราว 300 ล้านปีมาแล้ว จัดได้ว่าเป็นฟอสซิลที่มีชีวิต อีกจำพวกหนึ่งได้
ไทรออปส์ จัดอยู่ในสกุล Triops แบ่งออกได้ทั้งสิ้น 10 ชนิด ได้แก่
Triops australiensis (Spencer & Hall, 1895) Triops baeticus Korn, 2010 Triops cancriformis (Bosc, 1801) Triops emeritensis Korn & Pérez-Bote, 2010 Triops gadensis Korn & García-de-Lomas, 2010 Triops granarius (Lucas, 1864) Triops longicaudatus (LeConte, 1846) Triops mauritanicus Ghigi, 1921 Triops newberryi Thomas, 1921 Triops vicentinus Korn, Machado, Cristo & Cancela da Fonseca, 2010 พบแพร่กระจายอยู่ในหนองน้ำ หรือบึงน้ำในทวีปอเมริกาเหนือ , อเมริกาใต้ , ยุโรป , ยูเรเชีย , แอฟริกา , ญี่ปุ่น , นิวแคลิโดเนีย ,และ ออสเตรเลีย ยกเว้น แอนตาร์กติกา
ไทรออปส์ มีลักษณะโดยรวมคือ มีตา 3 ตา อันเป็นที่มาของชื่อ (ภาษาละติน : Tri = สาม, Ops = ตา) มีส่วนหางที่มีลักษณะเป็นง่ามคู่ที่ยาวออกมาอย่างเห็นได้ชัดเจน เป็นสัตว์ที่มีวงจรชีวิตสั้นมาก คือ สามารถมีชีวิตอยู่ได้เพียง 1-3 เดือน จึงเป็นสัตว์ที่มีอัตราการเจริญเติบโตอย่างรวดเร็ว โดยจะมีขนาดใหญ่ขึ้นถึงวันละ 2 เท่า ขนาดเมื่อโตเต็มที่โดยเฉลี่ยราว 1-3 นิ้ว แต่ในบางชนิดหากได้รับอาหาร และอุณหภูมิ ที่เหมาะสมอย่างเต็มที่อาจใหญ่ได้เท่ากับฝ่ามือมนุษย์
การหายใจ ของไทรออปส์อยู่ที่ขา ซึ่งมีมากถึง 35-71 คู่ ซึ่งใช้ทั้งว่ายน้ำและลำเลียงอาหารเข้าปาก และใช้ในการหายใจ เนื่องจากเท้าของไทรออปส์มีอวัยวะ พิเศษที่คล้ายเหงือกของสัตว์น้ำจำพวกอื่น ซึ่งขณะที่เคลื่อนที่หรือว่ายน้ำอยู่ ก็จะได้รับออกซิเจน จากน้ำ ผ่านเข้าไปทางขานั่นเอง
ปัจจุบัน ไทรออปส์นิยมเลี้ยงเป็นสัตว์เลี้ยง โดยเฉพาะในชนิด Triops longicaudatus และ T. cancriformis ด้วยความที่เป็นสัตว์แปลก และเลี้ยงง่าย ซึ่งนิยมจะเลี้ยงไทรออปส์ตั้งแต่ยังเป็นไข่ โดยจะทำการฟักไข่ของไทรออปส์ในตู้ปลา โดยจัดอุณหภูมิและสภาพน้ำที่เหมาะสม ไทรออปส์ก็สามารถฟักเป็นตัวได้ภายในเวลา 24 ชั่วโมง นอกจากนี้ แล้วไข่ของไทรออปส์ สามารถหยุดการเจริญเติบโตได้ โดยอาจจะหยุดการเจริญเติบโตได้ถึง 25 ปีเลยทีเดียว
ปัจจุบัน ได้มีการขายไข่ของไทรออปส์เป็นชุดสำเร็จรูป เป็นที่นิยมของวัยรุ่น ในสหรัฐอเมริกา ส่วนในประเทศไทย ก็มีผู้นำเข้ามาจำหน่ายด้วยเช่นกัน
