การฆ่าตัวตาย หรือ อัตวินิบาตกรรม เป็นการกระทำให้ตนเองถึงแก่ความตายอย่างตั้งใจ การฆ่าตัวตายมักเกิดจากภาวะซึมเศร้า ซึ่งเกิดจากความผิดปกติทางจิต เช่น โรคซึมเศร้า โรคอารมณ์สองขั้ว โรคจิตเภท ความผิดปกติทางบุคลิกภาพแบบก้ำกึ่ง โรคพิษสุรา หรือการใช้สารเสพติด ปัจจัยที่ทำให้เกิดความเครียดเช่นความลำบากทางการเงิน หรือปัญหากับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคลก็มีส่วนเช่นกัน ความพยายามป้องกันการฆ่าตัวตายหมายรวมถึงการจำกัดการฆ่าตัวตายด้วยวิธีต่าง ๆ เช่น ปืน และสารพิษ การรักษาอาการทางจิตและการใช้สารเสพติด และการปรับปรุงสถานะทางการเงิน แม้ว่าบริการที่ปรึกษาสายด่วนจะมีทั่วไป แต่แทบไม่มีหลักฐานว่าวิธีนี้จะมีประสิทธิภาพ

การใช้สารเสพติดเป็นปัจจัยเสี่ยงต่อการฆ่าตัวตายอันดับที่สองรองจากโรคซึมเศร้าและโรคอารมณ์สองขั้ว ทั้งการใช้สารเสพติดเรื้อรังและการเสพสารมึนเมาก็มีส่วน เมื่อรวมกับความโศกเศร้าส่วนตัว เช่น การสูญเสียคนรัก ความเสี่ยงยิ่งเพิ่มขึ้นอีก นอกจากนี้การใช้สารเสพติดยังเป็นเหตุให้เกิดโรคทางสุขภาพจิตใจด้วย

พุทธศาสนาถือว่าการฆ่าตัวตายไม่เป็นปาณาติบาต เพราะปาณาติบาตหมายถึงการฆ่าชีวิตอื่น พระโคตมพุทธเจ้าตรัสเล่าว่าพระองค์เคยเสวยพระชาติเป็นกระต่าย ได้กระโดดเข้ากองไฟเพื่อสละร่างกายตนเป็นอาหารของพราหมณ์คนหนึ่ง อย่างไรก็ตามผู้ฆ่าตัวตายด้วยความโกรธ ย่อมไปเกิดในอบายภูมิ เช่น นรกภูมิ เพราะความโกรธนั้น
