ฟูลเลอรีน

ฟูลเลอรีน (Fullerene) เป็นอัญรูปหนึ่งของคาร์บอนที่เพิ่งค้นพบ โดยตั้งชื่อตาม บักมินสเตอร์ ฟุลเลอร์ (Buckminster Fuller) ฟูลเลอรีนประกอบด้วยโมเลกุลของธาตุคาร์บอนทั้งหมด โดยมีรูปทรงเป็นทรงกลมกลวง ทรงรี หรือ ท่อ ฟูลเลอรีนทรงกลมนั้นบางครั้งก็เรียกว่า "บักกีบอล" (buckyballs) รูปC₆₀ นั้นมักจะถูกเปรียบเทียบกับลูกฟุตบอลสีขาวดำ สำหรับฟูลเลอรีนทรงกระบอกนั้น เรียกว่า "บักกี้ทูบ" หรือ "คาร์บอนนาโนทูบ

ฟูลเลอรีนนั้นมีโครงสร้างคล้ายกับแกรไฟต์ ซึ่งประกอบด้วยแผ่นวงแหวนหกเหลี่ยม แต่มีวงแหวนห้าเหลี่ยม (หรือบางครั้งก็เป็นวงแหวนเจ็ดเหลี่ยม) ซึ่งกั้นมิให้แผ่นวงแหวนนั้นกลายเป็นแผ่นเรียบ
