สังสการ (saṃskāra) เป็นพิธีกรรมเปลี่ยนผ่าน (rites of passage) ในชีวิตของมนุษย์ที่มีการบันทึกระบุไว้ในคัมภีร์สันสกฤตโบราณ หรือในอีกนัยหนึ่งอาจหมายถึงแนวคิดของกรรมในปรัชญาแบบอินเดีย คำว่า "สังสการ" นั้นแปลตรงตัวว่า "การนำมารวมกัน, การทำให้สมบูรณ์, การเตรียมพร้อม, การเตรียมตัว" หรือ "พิธีกรรมอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์เป็นที่เคารพนับถือ" ในทั้งภาษาบาลีและภาษาสันสกฤตโบราณ

คำว่าสังสการตามทฤษฎีเรื่องกรรม สังสการคือการจัดการ, ลักษณะทางพฤติกรรม ที่ปรากฏตั้งแต่การเกิด มีการพัฒนาและปรับปรุงไปตามเหตุการณ์ที่พบในชีวิต ที่มีอยู่เป็นรอยประทับบนจิตใต้สำนึก ตามแนวคิดด่าง ๆ ในปรัชญาฮินดู เช่น ปรัชญาโยคะ รอยประทับที่สมบูรณ์แบบหรือผิดเหล่านี้มีอิทธิพลต่อธรรมชาติของบุคคลนั้นในการตอบสนองและสภาวะของจิตใจ

ส่วนสังสการในอีกความหมายหนึ่งคือพิธีกรรมเปลี่ยนผ่านต่าง ๆ ที่มีอยู่อย่างหลากหลายในศาสนาฮินดู, ศาสนาไชนะ ศาสนาสิกข์ และ ศาสนาพุทธ ในศาสนาฮินดูแล้ว สังสการมีอยู่มากมายทั้งจำนวนพิธีและรายละเอียดซึ่งแตกต่างกันไปขึ้นอยู่กับความเชื่อท้องถิ่น ในโคตมธรรมสูตรอันเก่าแก่กว่าสหัสวรรศด้ระบุสังสการไว้ทั้งหมด 40 พิธี ส่วนครหยสูตรซึ่งใหม่กว่าราวศตวรรศ ระบุจำนวนไว้ที่ 16 พิธี สังสการมีตั้งแต่พิธัจากลักษณะภายนอก เช่น พิธีที่กำทพเมื่อแรกเกิด ไปจนถึงพิธีกรรมภายในจิตใจ เช่น การเห็นอกเห็นใจสิ่งมีชีวิตทั้งปวง
