โมกษะ

โมกษะ (ชื่ออื่น ๆ เช่น วิโมกษะ, วิมุขติ, มุขติ) เป็นคำศัพท์ในศาสนาฮินดู พุทธ ซิกข์ และ เชน หมายถึงรูปแบบต่าง ๆ ของการปลดปล่อย (emancipation), การตรัสรู้ (enlightment), การเป็นอิสระ (liberation) และการปล่อยไป (release) ในเชิงโมกขวิทยา (soteriology) และเชิงอวสานวิทยา (eschatology) หมายถึงอิสระจากสังสารวัฏ คือวงจรแห่งการเกิดและตาย ในขณะที่ความหมายในเชิงญาณวิทยา (epistemology) และในเชิงจิตวิทยา "โมกษะ" หมายถึงอิสระจากความไม่รู้ (ignorance) คือ การเข้าใจตัวเอง รู้จักตัวเอง และปรับปรุงตัวเอง

ตามคติของฮินดู โมกษะคือแนวคิดแกนกลาง และเป้าหมายสูงสุดของมนุษย์ซึ่งต้องผ่านขั้นสามขั้นในชีวิต คือ ธรรมะ (ชีวิตที่มีคุณธรรม จริยธรรมและความเหมาะสม), อรรถะ (ควาทเจริญทางวัตถุ เงินทอง ชีวิตที่มั่นคง ความหมายของชีวิต) และ กาม (ความสุขทางใจและอารมณ์ที่เบิกบาน) ทั้งหมดทั้งสี่แนวคิดนี้ เรียกรวมกันว่า "ปุรุษารถะ (Puruṣārtha)

บางครั้งคำว่าโมกษะ อาจใช้แทนกันกับคำว่า นิพพาน ได้ทั่วไป อย่างไรก็ตาม ทั้งสองคำมีความหมายและมุมมองที่แตกต่างกันไปตามนิกายและลัทธิในศาสนาฮินดู เชน และพุทธ คำว่านิพพานจะพบมากในศาสนาพุทธ ส่วนคำว่าโมกษะจะพบทั่วไปในศาสนาฮินดู

ศาสนาฮินดู

ในคัมภีร์เก่าแก่ของฮินดูบางฉบับใช้คำว่าโมกษะปะปนไปกับคำว่าเกวลญาณ (Keval jnana) หรือ ไกวัลย์ (kaivalya), อปวรรค (Apavarga), นิหสรียสะ (Nihsreyasa), บรมบท (Paramapada), พรหมภาวะ (Brahmabhava), พรหมญาณ (Brahmajnana) และ พราหมีสถิติ (Brahmi sthiti) ส่วนเอกสารใหม่ ๆ บางครั้งใช้คำว่า นิรวาน (นิพพาน) ซึ่งเป็นนิยามในศาสนาพุทธด้วย หกลัทธิหลักดั้งเดิมของฮินดูมีการโต้เถียงกันมาช้านานถึงประเด็นว่า การเข้าถึงโมกษะนั้นจะเกิดขึ้นได้ในชาติภพนี้หรือในอีกชาติภพถัดไป

ศาสนาพุทธ

คำว่า "โมกษะ" ไม่ค่อยพบในศาสนาพุทธ แต่มีคำหนึ่งที่เทียบเคียงกันได้คือ "วิมุตติ"

ศาสนาเชน

ทั้ง "โมกษะ" และ "นิรวาน" (นิพพาน) คือคำที่มีความหมายเดียวกันในศาสนาเชนและเป็นคำเดียวกัน บางครั้งคัมภีร์เชนจะใช้คำว่า "เกวลญาณ" และเรียกวิญญาณที่หลุดพ้นว่า "เกวลิน" ในศาสนาเชน โมกษะเป็นเป้าหมายที่สูงลิ่ว และให้นิยามโมกษะคือการหลุดพ้นเชิงจิตวิญญาณจากกรรมะทั้งปวง
