เกาะบอร์เนียว

บอร์เนียว (อังกฤษ: Borneo) หรือ กาลีมันตัน (อินโดนีเซีย: Kalimantan) เป็นเกาะที่มีขนาดใหญ่เป็นอันดับ 3 ของโลก รองจากเกาะกรีนแลนด์ (อันดับ 1) และเกาะนิวกินี (อันดับ 2) มีประเทศ 3 ประเทศอยู่ในเกาะบอร์เนียว คือ มาเลเซีย บรูไน อินโดนีเซีย อยู่บริเวณใจกลางกลุ่มเกาะมลายูและประเทศอินโดนีเซีย ในทางภูมิศาสตร์ เกาะบอร์เนียวเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ มีทรัพยากรน้ำมันและก๊าซธรรมชาติมากที่สุดในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้

ศัพทมูลวิทยา

เกาะนี้มีชื่อเรียกหลายแบบ ในระดับนานาชาติมีชื่อเรียกว่า บอร์เนียว ซึ่งมีที่มาจากการติดต่อของชาวยุโรปในอาณาจักรบรูไนช่วงคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 16 โดยในแผนที่ช่วง ค.ศ. 1601 เมืองบรูไนถูกระบุเป็นบอร์เนียว และมีการเรียกทั้งเกาะด้วยชื่อเดียวกัน ชื่อ Borneo ในภาษาอังกฤษอาจมาจากศัพท์ภาษาสันสกฤตว่า váruṇa (वरुण) ซึ่งอาจหมายถึง "น้ำ" หรือพระวรุณ เทพแห่งฝนของศาสนาฮินดู

ภูมิศาสตร์

เกาะบอร์เนียวล้อมรอบด้วยทะเลจีนใต้ทางทิศตะวันตกและตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ ทะเลซูลูทางตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ทะเลเซเลบีสกับช่องแคบมากัสซาร์ทางตะวันออก และทะเลชวากับช่องแคบการีมาตาทางใต้

ดินแดนทางตะวันตกของเกาะบอร์เนียวได้แก่ คาบสมุทรมลายูและเกาะสุมาตรา ทางใต้ได้แก่ เกาะชวา ทางตะวันออกได้แก่ เกาะซูลาเวซีและหมู่เกาะโมลุกกะ ส่วนทางตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือได้แก่ หมู่เกาะฟิลิปปินส์

จุดสูงที่สุดของเกาะบอร์เนียว คือเขากีนาบาลูในรัฐซาบะฮ์ ประเทศมาเลเซีย มีความสูง 4,101 เมตร เหนือระดับน้ำทะเล
