ปลาตะพาก เป็นปลาน้ำจืดในวงศ์ปลาตะเพียน (Cyprinidae) ในสกุล Hypsibarbus (/ฮีป-ซี-บาร์-บัส/) จัดเป็นปลาขนาดกลางในวงศ์นี้ มีรูปร่างลักษณะทั่วไปคล้ายปลาตะเพียนในสกุล Barbonymus ซึ่งอยู่วงศ์เดียวกัน แต่ปลาตะพากจะมีลำตัวที่ยาวกว่า และขนาดจะใหญ่ได้มากกว่า แพร่กระจายพันธุ์ในภูมิภาคเอเชียอาคเนย์และทางตอนใต้ของประเทศจีน พบอาศัยในแม่น้ำสายใหญ่รวมถึงลำธารน้ำตกบนภูเขาหรือป่าดิบชื้น

โดยมีขนาดลำตัวประมาณ 60-80 เซนติเมตร มีทั้งหมด 11 ชนิด (สูญพันธุ์ไปแล้ว 1 ชนิด ดูในตาราง) โดยมีชนิดที่รู้จักกันดีที่สุดคือ ปลาตะพากเหลือง (H. wetmorei) โดยปลาในสกุลนี้ถูกแยกออกมาจากสกุล Puntius ในปี ค.ศ. 1996 โดยวอลเตอร์ เรนโบธ โดยมีลักษณะสำคัญที่แตกต่างจากปลาในสกุลอื่น คือ มีก้านครีบเดี่ยวของครีบหลังมีขอบจักเป็นฟันเลื่อย ครีบท้องมีก้านครีบแขนง 8 ก้าน ใต้คางมีร่องแยกระหว่างขากรรไกรล่างและคาง ฐานครีบก้นยาวคิดเป็นร้อยละ 60 ของความยาวหัว ขอบเกล็ดแต่ละเกล็ดมีลายสีดำติดต่อกันเป็นร่างแห

ปลาตะพากมีชื่อเรียกรวมกันแบบอื่นอีก อาทิ "ปลากระพาก" (ประพาสไทรโยค), "ปลาปากหนวด", "ปลาปีก" (ภาษาอีสาน), "ปลาปากคำ" หรือ "ปลาสะป๊าก" (ภาษาเหนือ) เป็นต้น

โดยที่ชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ Hypsibarbus มาจากภาษากรีกโบราณคำว่า "ὕψι" (ฮิปซี) และ barbus (บาร์บัส) ซึ่งเป็นชื่อที่ใช้ทั่วไปของปลาในวงศ์ปลาตะเพียน โดยมีความหมายถึง สันฐานที่มีความแบนข้าง
