นิคมญี่ปุ่นในประเทศหมู่เกาะมาร์แชลล์ถูกกระตุ้นจากการค้าของญี่ปุ่นในภูมิภาคแปซิฟิก ในช่วงปลายคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 19 มีนักสำรวจชาวญี่ปุ่นคนแรกเดินทางมาถึงหมู่เกาะมาร์แชลล์ ทว่าการตั้งถิ่นฐานถาวรจะยังไม่เริ่มขึ้นจนกระทั่งคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1920 เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับดินแดนอื่นในภูมิภาคไมโครนีเซียที่เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของแปซิฟิกใต้ในอาณัติ พบว่าจำนวนประชากรชาวญี่ปุ่นในหมู่เกาะมาร์แชลล์มีจำนวนน้อยมากเมื่อเทียบกับพื้นที่อื่น หลังการยอมจำนนของญี่ปุ่นใน ค.ศ. 1945 ชาวญี่ปุ่นถูกส่งตัวกลับประเทศ ขณะที่ประชากรลูกครึ่งญี่ปุ่น-มาร์แชลล์ ยังคงอาศัยอยู่ในหมู่เกาะต่อไป พบกเขาถือได้ว่าเป็นประชากรกลุ่มน้อยที่มีจำนวนมากกลุ่มหนึ่ง และมีบทบาทสำคัญในภาคธุรกิจ ภาครัฐและการเมืองของประเทศ
