สมรรถนะทางการสื่อสาร (อังกฤษ : Communicative competence ) เป็นศัพท์ที่ใช้ในภาษาศาสตร์ ซึ่งหมายถึง การใช้ความรู้ทางด้านไวยากรณ์ วากยสัมพันธ์ สัณฐานวิทยา สัทศาสตร์ และอื่น ๆ รวมถึงความรู้ทางสังคมเกี่ยวกับวิธีและเวลาในการใช้ถ้อยคำอย่างเหมาะสม
เดลล์ ไฮมส์ (พ.ศ. 2509) ได้กล่าวว่าการรับรู้ยังไม่เพียงพอในความแตกต่างระหว่าง สมรรถนะทางภาษาศาสตร์ (linguistic competence) กับประสิทธิภาพทางการใช้ภาษา (linguistic performance) ในงานของโนม ชอมสกี (พ.ศ. 2508) "รูปแบบทางการสื่อสารและหน้าที่ของการสื่อสารมีความสัมพันธ์ซึ่งกันและกัน" คำศัพท์และแนวคิดนี้บุกเบิกโดย เดลล์ ไฮมส์ ปัจจุบันรู้จักกันว่าเป็น ชาติพันธุ์วรรณนาแห่งการสื่อสาร (Ethnography of Communication)
แนวคิดเกี่ยวกับสมรรถนะทางการสื่อสาร เป็นหนึ่งในทฤษฎีสำคัญในหลักวิธีและแนวทางการสื่อสารในการสอนภาษาต่างประเทศ รูปแบบเชิงแนวคิดมีอย่างน้อย 3 รูปแบบหลัก คือ
