ระวังสับสนกับ ภาวะเงินเฟ้อลดลง ซึ่งเป็นการที่อัตราเงินเฟ้อช้าลง

ในด้านเศรษฐศาสตร์ ภาวะเงินฝืด (อังกฤษ: deflation) เป็นการลดลงของระดับราคาทั่วไปในสินค้าและบริการ ภาวะเงินฝืดเกิดขึ้นเมื่ออัตราเงินเฟ้อลดลงต่ำกว่า 0% (อัตราเงินเฟ้อติดลบ) ภาวะเงินเฟ้อลดค่าของสกุลเงินเรื่อย ๆ แต่ภาวะเงินฝืดฉับพลันทำให้มันเพิ่มขึ้น นั่นทำให้สินค้าและบริการถูกซื้อมากขึ้นด้วยเงินจำนวนเท่าเดิม ภาวะเงินฝืดมีความแตกต่างจากภาวะเงินเฟ้อลดลง ซึ่งคือการที่อัตราเงินเฟ้อช้าลง เช่น เมื่อเงินเฟ้อลดลงถึงจุดต่ำกว่าเดิมแต่ยังคงให้ผลกระทบในแง่บวก

นักเศรษฐศาสตร์โดยทั่วไปเชื่อว่าภาวะเงินฝืดอย่างกะทันหันเป็นปัญหาในเศรษฐกิจสมัยใหม่ เพราะมันเพิ่มค่าจริงของหนี้ โดยเฉพาะถ้าภาวะเงินฝืดเกิดขึ้นโดยไม่ทันตั้งตัว ภาวะเงินฝืดอาจทำให้ภาวะถดถอยรุนแรงและนำไปสู่วงจรอุบาทว์เงินฝืด (deflationary spiral)

ภาวะเงินฝืดมักเกิดขึ้นเมื่อมีอุปทานสูง (มีส่วนเกินของผลผลิต) ความต้องการต่ำ (การบริโภคลดลง) หรืออุปทานเงินลดลง (บางครั้งเป็นผลจากภาวะเศรษฐกิจถดถอย ซึ่งเกิดจากการลงทุนอย่างประมาทหรือเครดิตครันช์) หรือเป็นเพราะเงินทุนไหลออกสุทธิทางเศรษฐกิจ นอกจากนี้ ภาวะนี้ยังสามารถเกิดจากการแข่งขันที่มากเกินไปและการกระจุกตัวของตลาดที่น้อยเกินไป
