กลุ่มภาษาเคลต์

กลุ่มภาษาเคลต์ เป็นกลุ่มภาษาที่เป็นสาขาของตระกูลภาษาอินโด-ยูโรเปียน ในปัจจุบันมีภาษาในกลุ่มภาษาเคลต์ที่ยังมีใช้อยู่สี่ภาษา ได้แก่ ภาษาเวลส์ ภาษาเบรอตง ภาษาไอริช และภาษาแกลิกสกอต นอกจากนี้ ยังมีภาษาที่สูญพันธ์ไปในยุคสมัยใหม่ คือ ภาษาคอร์นวอลล์ และภาษาแมน

คำว่าเคลต์เป็นคำที่ประดิษฐ์โดย Edward Lhuyd เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2250 ซึ่งเป็นคำที่เคยใช้โดยนักเขียนชาววกรีกและโรมันใช้เรียกเผ่าในดินแดนกอลตอนกลางประมาณ 457 ปีก่อนพุทธศักราช ในยุคโบราณ ภาษากลุ่มนี้มีใช้พูดในภาคพื้นทวีปยุโรปจากอ่าวบิสภายในบริเวณทะเลเหนือไปจนถึงแม่น้ำไรน์ แม่น้ำดานูบในบริเวณทะเลดำ และคาบสมุทรบอลข่านตอนบน และเอเชียไมเนอร์ (กาลาเทีย) ปัจจุบัน กลุ่มภาษาเคลต์จำกัดอยู่ในบริเวณเฉพาะสหราชอาณาจักร เกาะแมน ไอร์แลนด์ เกาะเคปเบรตัน ปาตาโกเนีย และคาบสมุทรบริตทานีในฝรั่งเศส การแพร่กระจายไปสู่บรีตันและปาตาโกเนียเกิดขึ้นในสมัยปัจจุบันส่วนในบริเวณอื่นๆ ภาษากลุ่มนี้เหลือผู้พูดเพียงเล็กน้อย

การจัดจำแนก

ภาษาเคลต์ดั้งเดิม แบ่งย่อยเป็น 4 กลุ่ม ได้แก่

  • กลุ่มภาษากอลลิชและกลุ่มที่ใกล้เคียงคือ เลปอนติก นอร์อิกและกาลาเทีย ภาษาเหล่านี้ครั้งหนึ่งเคยใช้พูดกระจายเป็นบริเวณกว้างจากฝรั่งเศสถึงตุรกีและจากเบลเยียมถึงอิตาลีภาคเหนือ ส่วนใหญ่เป็นภาษาตาย
  • กลุ่มภาษาเซลติเบเรียน เคยใช้พูดในคาบสมุทรไอบีเรีย ซึ่งปัจจุบันได้แก่ โปรตุเกสเหนือ กาลิเซีย อัสตูเรียส กันตาเบรีย อารากอน และเลออนในสเปน ภาษาลูซิตาเนียอาจจะเคยเป็นภาษาในกลุ่มเคลต์นี้ ส่วนใหญ่เป็นภาษาตาย
  • กลุ่มภาษากอยเดลิก รวมทั้งภาษาไอริช ภาษาสกอตติช แกลิก และภาษาแมนซ์
  • กลุ่มภาษาไบรโตนิกหรือบริติช ได้แก่ ภาษาเวลส์ ภาษาบรีตัน ภาษาคอนนิช ภาษาคัมบริด และอาจจะรวมภาษาปิกติช ซึ่งคาดว่าจะเป็นภาษาพี่น้องมากกว่าภาษาลูกหลาน

นักวิชาการบางคนจำแนกภาษากลุ่มเคลต์บนแผ่นดินและภาษาเคลต์ในหมู่เกาะโดยดูที่ความแตกต่างระหว่างกลุ่มภาษากอยเดลิกและบริโตนิก ซึ่งแสดงถึงการแยกตัวออกของภาษากลุ่มเคลต์บนแผ่นดินใหญ่

ภาษาบรีตันจัดเป็นภาษาในกลุ่มไบรโตนิกไม่ใช่ภาษากลุ่มกอลลิชแม้ว่าอาจจะเพิ่มเข้ามาภายหลัง เมื่อชาวแองโกล-แซกซอนเคลื่อนย้ายเข้าสู่เกาะอังกฤษ มีชาวไบรทอนหรือเวลส์ที่อาจจะมาจากภาษากลุ่มเจอร์มานิกที่แปลว่าคนต่างชาติได้ข้ามช่องแคบอังกฤษเข้ามาอยู่ในบริแตนนีและได้นำภาษากลุ่มไบโตนิกมาด้วย ภาษานี้ได้พัฒนามาเป็นภาษาบรีตัน ซึ่งยังเข้าใจกันดั้บภาษาเวลส์สมัยใหม่และภาษาคอร์นนิช
