ปลาจาด เป็นสกุลของปลาน้ำจืดสกุลหนึ่ง ในวงศ์ปลาตะเพียน (Cyprinidae) ใช้ชื่อสกุลว่า Poropuntius (/พอร์-โอ-พุน-ชัส/)
ความเป็นมาของปลาในสกุลนี้เริ่มจากแม็กซ์ วีลเฮม คาร์ล เวบเบอร์ และลีฟาน เฟอดินานด์ เดอ โบฟอร์ต ได้ตั้งสกุล Lissocheilus (ปัจจุบันถูกยกเลิกไปแล้ว) ขึ้นในปี ค.ศ. 1916 เพื่อใช้กับปลาในวงศ์ปลาตะเพียนที่พบในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ โดยอธิบายว่า
ครีบหลังมีก้านครีบแขนง 9 ก้าน ก้านครีบเดี่ยวก้านสุดท้ายเป็นหนามแข็งและขอบเรียบ เกล็ดใหญ่ริมฝีปากบนและล่างเชื่อมติดกัน ระหว่างริมฝีปากบนและจะงอยปากเป็นร่องลึก ริมฝีปากล่างส่วนกลางเชื่อมติดกับเอ็นยึดคางส่วนหน้า มีแผ่นหนังแข็ง ๆ คลุมจุดเชื่อมดังกล่าว หนวดที่ริมฝีปากบนและมุมปากบนค่อนข้างยาว บริเวณหน้าและใต้นัยน์ตามีรูเล็ก ๆ ขอบนูนเรียงเป็นแถว ๆ
ต่อมาในปี ค.ศ. 1919 มะสึมิสึ โอชิมะ นักมีนวิทยาชาวญี่ปุ่น ได้พบว่าปลาบางส่วนของสกุล Lissocheilus มีริมฝีปากล่างแยกออกมาเป็น 3 ส่วน ส่วนกลางเป็นแผ่นหนังใหญ่ ทำให้มีปัญหาในการจำแนกชนิด จึงได้ตั้งสกุล Acrossocheilus ขึ้น (ซึ่งปัจจุบันสกุลนี้ใช้ระบุปลาที่พบในประเทศเวียดนามและจีนตอนใต้ เป็นหลัก) โดยจำแนกปลาที่อยู่ในสกุล Lissocheilus เดิมที่มีลักษณะของริมฝีปากล่างตามที่กล่าวมาให้อยู่ในสกุลนี้
ต่อมา ฮิวจ์ แมคคอร์มิค สมิธ ได้ตั้งสกุล Poropuntius นี้ขึ้น ในปี ค.ศ. 1931 โดยแยกออกจากสกุล Lissocheilus ซึ่งครีบหลังมีก้านครีบแขนง 8 ก้าน ก้านครีบเดี่ยวก้านสุดท้ายเป็นหนามแข็งและขอบจักเป็นฟันเลื่อย ชื่อสกุล Lissocheilus ต้องถูกยกเลิก เพราะพบว่าตั้งซ้ำซ้อนกับสกุลของหอยที่เป็นซากฟอสซิลซึ่งมีผู้ตั้งไว้ในปี ค.ศ. 1882 ดังนั้น จึงต้องหันกลับไปพิจารณาระหว่างสกุล Poropuntius กับสกุล Acrossocheilus ก็พบว่าลักษณะทางอนุกรมวิธานของสกุล Poropuntius นั้นเด่นกว่าสกุล Acrossocheilus ในปี ค.ศ. 1996 วอลเตอร์ เรนโบธ เสนอให้ใช้สกุล Poropuntius กับปลาที่แมลคัม อาร์เธอร์ สมิธ อนุกรมวิธานไว้ในปี ค.ศ. 1945 คือ ปลาจาดบ้านถ้ำ (P. bantamensis) และปลาเขยา (P. deauratus) ที่เดิมเคยใช้ชื่อสกุล Acrossocheilus เปลี่ยนมาใช้ชื่อสกุลนี้
แต่อย่างไรก็ดี ยังมีความสับสนอย่างมากในการใช้ชื่อสกุลของสกุลนี้ เรนโบธจึงเสนอขึ้นมาในปี ค.ศ. 1985 ให้ใช้สกุล Neolissocheilus ขึ้น ซึ่งปัจจุบันนี้ใช้ในกลุ่มปลาพลวง
อย่างไรก็ตาม สกุล Poropuntius นี้ มีความคล้ายคลึงกับสกุล Hypsibarbus ซึ่งเป็นสกุลที่เรนโบธตั้งขึ้นเองในปี ค.ศ. 1996 ซึ่งเป็นสกุลของกลุ่มปลาตะพากอยู่ โดยในบางชนิด คือ ปลาตะพากส้ม (H. malcomi) หรือปลาปากหนวด (H. vernayi) ในบางครั้งก็ใช้ชื่อพ้องสกุล Poropuntius เหมือนกัน อีกทั้งชื่อสามัญก็ยังเป็นชื่อเดียวกัน แต่ขนาดโดยทั่วไปของปลาสกุล Poropuntius มีขนาดเล็กกว่าปลาสกุล Hypsibarbus
