พาราณสี

พาราณสี (บาลี: Bārāṇasī พาราณสี; สันสกฤต: वाराणसी, Vārāṇasī วาราณสี, เสียงอ่านภาษาฮินดูสถาน: [ʋaːˈɾaːɳəsiː]  ( ฟัง)) เป็นเมืองหลวงของแคว้นกาสี (Kingdom of Kashi) ในสมัยพุทธกาล ปัจจุบันตั้งอยู่ในรัฐอุตตรประเทศ ประเทศอินเดีย ห่างจากลัคเนาซึ่งเป็นเมืองหลวงของอุตตรประเทศเป็นระยะทาง 320 กิโลเมตร พาราณสีมีแม่น้ำคงคาไหลผ่าน เป็นเมืองที่ศักดิสิทธิ์ที่สุดหนึ่งในเจ็ดเมืองศักดิสิทธิ์ (สัปดาปุริ, Sapta Puri) ในความเชื่อของศาสนาฮินดูและศาสนาเชน พาราณสีมีประวัติความเป็นมายาวนานกว่า 4,000 ปี เป็นเมืองที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดของประเทศอินเดียและยังจัดเป็นเมืองที่มีผู้อยู่อาศัยต่อเนื่องยาวนานที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์โลกด้วย ถือว่าเป็นสุทธาวาสที่สถิตแห่งศิวเทพ ถือว่าเป็นเมืองอมตะของอินเดียและเป็นที่แสวงบุญทั้งของชาวฮินดูและชาวพุทธทั่วโลก ครั้งสมัยอาณานิคม เมืองนี้มีชื่อว่า เบนาเรส (Benares)

พาราณสียังเป็นเมืองที่เกี่ยวข้องกับพระพุทธศาสนาในหลายด้าน โดยมีอาณาเขตครอบคลุมถึงป่าอิสิปตนมฤคทายวัน ที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงปฐมเทศนาแก่พระปัญจวัคคีย์ ซึ่งปัจจุบันเรียกว่า สารนาถ. อันเป็นสังเวชนียสถานแห่งหนึ่ง ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ชานเมืองพาราณสี
