สถาปัตยกรรมโบสถ์พราหมณ์

สถาปัตยกรรมศาสนสถานฮินดู เป็นรูปแบบหลักของสถาปัตยกรรมฮินดู มีรูปแบบที่หลากหลาย อย่างไรก็ตามธรรมขาติพื้นฐานของโบสถ์พราหมณ์แต่ละแห่งล้วนเหมือนกัน คือมีองค์ประกอบพื้นฐาน “ครรภคฤห์” คือห้องด้านในที่ประดิษฐานมูรติองค์หลักของวัด ในห้องที่สร้างขึ้นอย่างเรียบง่าย โครงสร้างอื่น ๆ ที่สร้างขึ้นล้อมรอบห้องครรภคฤห์นั้นก็มีความแตกต่างกันไป โครงสร้างที่เป็นหอครอบด้านบนของครรภคฤห์เรียกว่า “ศิขร” ในอินเดียเหนือ หรือ “วิมานัม” ในอินเดียใต้ และ “เปอลิงกีฮ์เมรู” ในบาหลี อาคารศาลนั้นมักมีพื้นที่ ambulatory สำหรับทำปริกรม (circumambulation) และมีอาคารอื่น ๆ เช่น มณฑป, อันตรละ

ลักษณะที่แตกต่างกันของสถาปัตยกรรม

จอร์จ มิเชลล์ระบุว่าคัมภีร์เก่าแก่เกี่ยวกับสถาปัตยกรรมของฮินดู เช่น พริหัตสัมหิตา (Brihatsamhita) แบ่งวัดออกดป็นห้าระดับตามลักษณะทั่วไป คือ แบบนครา, ทราวิฑา, เวสรา, วงรี และ สี่เหลี่ยม แปลนการสร้างก็แบ่งย่อยออกเป็นทั้งแบบจตุรัส, แปดเหลี่ยม และ ทรงมุขโค้งด้านสกัด ในแต่ละสถาปัตยกรรมมีการสร้างคำศัพท์ต่าง ๆ ขึ้นเป็นของตน บางคำก็ทับซ้อนกันแต่อาจไม่ได้หมายถึงหรือเทียบเทียงกับสิ่งเดียวกันในอีกสถาปัตยกรรม หากแบ่งตามช่วงเวลา แบบคลาสสิก (จนถึงราวศตวรรษที่ 7-8) คือแบบที่เก่าแก่ที่สุด, บ้างเรียกยุคศตวรรษที่ 12-13 ว่าเป็นแบบยุคกลาง

นอกจากแนวคิดทางศาสนา ปรัมปรา และคัมภีร์แล้ว สถาปัตยกรรมเหล่านี้ล้วนเป็นผลจากนวัตกรรมพื้นถิ่น วัสดุที่หาได้ในท้องถิ่น และภูมิอากาศ อาจมีพบวัสดุบางชนิดที่นำเข้ามาจากพื้นที่อื่น แต่ส่วนใหญ่ก็สร้างจากวัสดุที่หาได้ในพื้นที่ ในบางพื้นที่เช่นกรนาฏกะใต้พบหินจำพวกอ่อน ทำให้สถาปัตยกรรมแบบฮอยศาลามีลักษณะที่ยากจะใช้หินแข็งพวกคริสตัลลีนมาสร้าง บางพื้นที่ก็มีการแกะสลักเข้าไปในภูเขาหินด้วยพื้นที่ที่มีภูมิลักษณะเอื้ออำนวย ในบางพื้นที่ที่ไม่สามารถพบหินสำหรับก่อสร้างได้ทั่วไปก็เกิดการพัฒนาอิฐมาใช้ในการสร้างจำนวนมาก วัสดุที่หาได้ในท้องถิ่นจึงมีผลมากต่อการพัฒนาลักษณะสถาปัตยกรรมเฉพาะของแต่ละแหล่ง

ในบรรดาสถาปัตยกรรมที่แตกต่างในอินเดีย สถาปัตยกรรมสองแบบที่พบได้ทั่วไปที่สุดคือ “สถาปัตยกรรมแบบนคร” หรือแบบอินเดียเหนือ และ “สถาปัตยกรรมทราวิฑ” หรือแบบอินเดียใต้

สถาปัตยกรรมที่พบมากในโอฑิศา และอันธระประเทศเหนือ เรียกว่าสถาปัตยกรรมแบบกลิงคะ ในโบสถ์พราหมณ์แบบกลิงคะแบ่งรูปแบบออกเป็นสามชนิดที่แตกต่างกันคือ “เรขาดูลา”, “พิธาดูลา” และ “ขัขราดูลา” โดยคำว่า “ดูลา” (Deula) แปลว่า “วัด” ในภาษาพื้นเมือง สองอันแรกนั้นเกี่ยวข้องกับพระวิษณุ, พระสุริยะ และ พระศิวะ ส่วนแบบหลังนั้นเกี่ยวข้องกับพระจมุนทะ และ พระทุรคา ตัวอย่างสำคัญของเรขดูลาคือวัดลิงคราชและผวัดชังคนาถ ตัวอย่างสำคัญของขัขราดูลาคือไวตัลดูลา ส่วนวัดโกนารักเป็นตัวอย่างสำคัญของพิธดูลา
