ชอคทอว์จัดอยู่ในกลุ่มภาษามัสคีกิน (Muskogean languages)

คำว่า “Choctaw” (หรือสะกด: “Chahta” “Chactas” “Chato” “Tchakta” and “Chocktaw”) แผลงมาจากคำในภาษาคาสตีลว่า “Chato” ที่แปลว่า “ราบ” แต่นักโบราณคดีจอห์น สวอนทันให้ความเห็นว่าเป็นคำที่มาจากชื่อผู้นำของชอคทอว์เอง ส่วนนักประวัติศาสตร์เฮนรี ฮาลเบิร์ตให้ความเห็นว่าเป็นคำที่มาจากวลีชอคทอว์ “Hacha hatak” (ชนแห่งลุ่มน้ำ)
