พระโคตมพุทธเจ้า ผู้เป็นศาสดาของศาสนาพุทธนั้น เป็นผู้ที่ศาสนิกชนฮินดูและบาไฮเคารพในฐานะผู้ประกาศศาสนาของพระเป็นเจ้า เอกสารฮินดูบางฉบับระบุว่าพระพุทธเจ้าเป็นอวตารของพระวิษณุ เพื่อหลอกล่อให้มนุษย์ห่างไกลจากพระเวท ในขณะที่มุสลิมที่ไม่สังกัดนิกาย และกลุ่มนิยมกุรอานบางคน เชื่อว่าพระพุทธเจ้าเป็นผู้เผยพระวจนะ โดยเฉพาะมุสลิมกลุ่มอะห์มะดียะฮ์ยกย่องว่าพระพุทธองค์เป็นนบี หรือผู้เผยพระวจนะอีกคนหนึ่ง

ศาสนาคริสต์ มีตำนานของชาวกรีกเรื่องบาร์ลามและโยซาฟัต รจนาโดยยอห์นแห่งดามัสกัสเมื่อคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 7 แต่เนื้อหาผิดเพี้ยนเมื่อยูทิมีอุสชาวแอทอส นักพรตชาวจอร์เจีย เขียนเพิ่มเติมใหม่เมื่อคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 11 เนื้อหาเป็นเรื่องราวของโยซาฟัต ผู้เป็นเจ้านายก่อนออกบวช ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับพุทธประวัติในช่วงต้น ก่อนออกผนวช โดยชื่อ "โยซาฟัต" มาจากคำสันสกฤตว่า "โพธิสตฺตฺว" เป็นพระนามหนึ่งของพระโคตมพุทธเจ้า มีการเฉลิมฉลองนักบุญบาร์ลามและโยซาฟัตตามปฏิทินกรีกออร์ทอดอกซ์ในวันที่ 26 สิงหาคมของทุกปี ต่อมาโลกตะวันตกกำหนดให้มีการเฉลิมฉลองนักบุญบาร์ลามและโยซาฟัตในวันที่ 27 พฤศจิกายนของทุกปี ลงในมรณสักขีวิทยาโรมัน

ศาสนาบาไฮเชื่อว่า พระพุทธเจ้าเป็นหนึ่งในการสำแดงของพระเป็นเจ้า และเป็นผู้เผยพระวจนะคนสำคัญของศาสนาบาไฮ โดยพระบะฮาอุลลอฮ์ ศาสดาของศาสนาบาไฮเชื่อว่า ตนเองเป็นพระพุทธเจ้าลำดับที่ 5 ต่อจากผู้เผยพระวจนะพระองค์อื่น ๆ

ษูลกิฟล์ ศาสดาคนหนึ่งของศาสนาอิสลาม ถูกระบุว่าเป็นบุคคลเดียวกันกับพระโคตมพุทธเจ้า ความหมายของชื่อศาสดาคนนี้ยังเป็นที่ถกเถียง บ้างว่า แปลว่า "ผู้มาจากกิฟล์" โดย "กิลฟ์" คือการออกเสียงชื่อเมืองกบิลพัสดุ์ในภาษาอาหรับ และเมืองดังกล่าวเป็นเมืองที่สมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าทรงใช้ชีวิตอยู่ราว 30 ปี บ้างก็อธิบายว่ามาจากชื่อเมืองกาปีล (Kapeel) อันเป็นเมืองหลวงของรัฐขนาดน้อยแถบชายแดนประเทศอินเดียและเนปาลในปัจจุบัน ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับมาตุภูมิเดิมของพระพุทธเจ้าคือกบิลพัสดุ์ และในภาษาอาหรับไม่มีพยัญชนะเสียง 'p' ด้วยเหตุนี้ "กาปีล" จึงถูกทับศัพท์เป็น "กิลฟ์"

สอดคล้องกับโองการแรกของบทที่ 95 ซูเราะฮ์อัต-ตีน ในคัมภีร์อัลกุรอาน ความว่า

ขอสาบานด้วยต้นมะเดื่อและต้นมะกอก และด้วยภูเขาฎูรซีนาย และด้วยเมืองนี้ [มักกะฮ์] ที่ปลอดภัย

— อัลกุรอาน, 95:1-3

มีเรื่องราวการตรัสรู้ของพระพุทธเจ้าที่ใต้ต้นมะเดื่อ หากเรียบเรียงจากเหตุการเผยพระวจนะแล้ว จะพบว่า โมเสส หรือนบีมูซา เผยพระวจนะที่ภูเขาซีนาย พระเยซู หรือนบีอีซา เผยพระวจนะที่ใต้ต้นมะกอก นบีมุฮัมมัด เผยพระวจนะที่มักกะฮ์ ส่วนต้นมะเดื่อที่เหลือนั้น น่าจะหมายถึงพระพุทธเจ้าที่ตรัสรู้ และเผยพระวจนะ

อะฮ์มาดียะฮ์

ในหนังสือ Revelation, Rational, Knowledge & Truth ("การเปิดเผย เหตุผล ความรู้ และความจริง") ของมีร์ซา ตาฮีร์ อะฮ์มัด (Mirza Tahir Ahmad) เคาะลีฟะฮ์ลำดับที่สี่ของอะฮ์มาดียะฮ์ ระบุไว้ว่า พระพุทธเจ้าเป็นผู้เผยพระวจนะของพระเจ้าอย่างแท้จริง โดยอ้างอิงจากจารึกบนสถูปของพระเจ้าอโศก ซึ่งกล่าวถึง "อีศาน" ซึ่งเป็นพระเจ้าองค์หนึ่งไว้ว่า "ทรงตรัสกับเทวานัมปิยติสสะว่า "ด้วยเหตุนี้ในขณะนี้ ข้าพเจ้าได้แสดงพระธรรมเทศนา ข้าพเจ้าได้กำหนดศาสนพิธีไว้แล้ว มนุษย์ทั้งหลายที่ได้สดับความ ให้พึงประพฤติตนให้ถูกต้องเพื่อถวายพระเกียรติแก่พระเป็นเจ้า (อีศาน)""

และในหนังสือ An Elementary Study of Islam ("การศึกษาศาสนาอิสลามเบื้องต้น") ของมีร์ซา ตาฮีร์ อะฮ์มัด ระบุไว้ว่า ษูลกิฟล์ที่ปรากฏอยู่ในพระคัมภีร์อัลกุรอาน อาจะเป็นคนเดียวกับพระพุทธเจ้า

ในคัมภีร์ ปุราณะ ระบุว่า พระโคตมพุทธเจ้าเป็นอวตารหนึ่งของพระวิษณุ พระเป็นเจ้าองค์หนึ่งของศาสนาฮินดู ใน ภควตปุราณะ ระบุว่า พระพุทธเจ้าเป็นอวตารลำดับที่ยี่สิบสี่จากทั้งหมดยี่สิบห้าอวตารของพระวิษณุ แต่ชาวฮินดูจำนวนมากเชื่อว่า พระพุทธเจ้าเป็นหนึ่งในอวตารหลักทั้งสิบของพระวิษณุ ถือเป็นกระบวนการกลืนให้เป็นฮินดู

หลักธรรมคำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าไม่เชื่อในความขลังหรือความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ของพระเวท และปฏิเสธอำนาจของพระเป็นเจ้า (คือไม่เชื่อว่ามีพระเจ้า) ชาวฮินดูยุคก่อนจึงมองว่า ศาสนาพุทธคือสำนักคิดแบบนาสติกะ (ซึ่งแท้จริงแล้วไม่เป็นเช่นนั้น)
